Box Elder, South Dakota continues to expand as a bedroom community to Rapid City, and the City is actively recruiting commercial and industrial development. The need for better information management and visualization precipitated the development of key data layers for city planning purposes, including existing and future land use, zoning, city maps, structure locations, future projects, and other maps used by city officials and the public. City mapping using GIS has provided Box Elder the opportunity to advance its planning efforts without a significant in-house GIS investment.
