Custer County began using GIS in 1995 and is one of the more progressive counties in western South Dakota with respect to GIS development and application. The primary reason the County began using GIS was to assist 911 dispatch in developing a master street address guide and map atlas. An evaluation of the County's GIS data holdings was completed by FourFront staff in 2001 to address problems with file management, GIS software license management, and to clarify the status of GIS data development. The GIS evaluation also included a discussion of data access and security issues, computer networking, lack of metadata, and lack of data archiving. A review of Custer County's GIS data holdings was completed and data was reorganized and archived into a more efficient data structure. |
