Although there is an abundance of federal and state digital data available for incorporation into GIS projects, most site-specific mapping requires at least some data development or data conversion. GIS software such as ESRI's ArcGIS is tailored for GIS data development in multiple GIS formats, such as geodatabases and shapefiles. GIS software has many data creation and editing tools. In GIS, features area mapped as either points, lines, or polygons. New digital data is often created using high-resolution aerial orthophotography as a reference layer from which to digitize. To transfer information on paper maps to digital format, the paper is scanned to a digital image format and georeferenced into the GIS. FourFront uses ESRI's ArcInfo GIS software to easily convert between CAD and GIS formats, bringing engineering drawings and designs into the GIS realm for field data attribution. |
