The City of Deadwood identified the value of FIS in 2001, especially from the perspective of historic information preservation and dissemination. However, Deadwood's staff size limited its resources and the City requested help in planning for GIS implementation. A GIS needs assessment and implementation plan was completed by FourFront staff to determine the potential uses of GIS within City government, inventory existing GIS-related data holdings, develop a data creation strategy, and write a multi-year, phased implementation strategy. Following the plan's strategy, the City began GIS implementation, purchasing high-resolution aerial photos, converting planimetric data from CAD to GIS format, scanning and georeferencing Sanborn fire insurance maps, and collecting and attributing infrastructure data layers. |
