In 2007, Moving Forward with EAFB began the process of examining the area surrounding Ellsworth, SD, to find ways to address land use conflicts associated with the base's Accident Prevention Zones (APZ) and Air Installation Compatible Use Zones (AICUZ). AICUZs are modeled noise contours based on military flight patterns. The goal of Moving Forward, which is composed of local government representatives and community supporters, is to keep EAFB open though the next round of base closures. Working with the City of Box Elder, which is adjacent to the Base, FourFront assisted the City in developing GIS data layers, including land use and jurisdictional boundaries. With this information, Moving Forward will identify parcels located in each APZ and AICUZ boundary. |
