Preliminary engineering site planning often requires identification and mapping of existing floodplain data. GIS is used to map floodplain boundaries based on FEMA FIRM maps and to spatially reference paper FIRM maps into align with survey data that is in a known coordinate system. GIS provides a useful way to quickly identify site areas requiring further design to accommodate existing floodplain conditions or to alter existing topographic conditions to remove site areas from the floodway.
