A long-standing legal dispute over compensation for oil rig access roads on private property was assisted using GIS to accurately measure road lengths. FourFront was hired to map oil access road segments on private property. First, road segments were digitized off of a georeferenced road map that had been hand drawn by the oil company. Based on a review of aerial orthophotography of the area, it was apparent that this map was not spatially correct. In order to illustrate that the GIS was accurate in its measurements, the road segment lengths were compared to readings collected using a car odometer and a digital plan measurement tool. A report was written that described the results of the investigation, a summary of GIS technology and the techniques used for analysis and development procedures. This work provided the client with an accurate inventory of roads on their property, substantially increasing the estimate of their claim for property access compensation. |
