The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority currently maintains numerous surface facilities at the former Homestake Gold Mine (now DUSEL) site in Lead, SD. To demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of GIS to a campus setting, FourFront Design developed a GIS pilot project for several buildings at the site. GIS proved to be a useful asset management tool for maintaining and tracking information on both the facility's buildings and grounds. A site plan map was developed showing topography, building footprints, vegetation, parking and road infrastructure. Pertinent documents were hyperlinked to the building footprints. This enabled selection and launching of the documents for viewing from within the GIS software. In addition, a 3D virtual representation of the site was created using ArcGIS 3D Analyst and a fly-thru video allowed visualization of the site from multiple perspectives.
