The SD Science & Technology Authority currently maintains numerous surface facilities at the former Homestake Gold Mine (now DUSEL) site, in Lead, SD. To demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of GIS to a campus setting, FourFront developed a GIS pilot project for several buildings at the site. GIS proved to be a useful information management tool for maintaining and tracking information on both the facility's buildings and grounds. A site plan map was developed showing topography, building footprints, vegetation, and parking and road infrastructure. For two of the buildings, multi-story floor plan designs were created and overlain on the building footprints. Pertinent documents were hyper linked to the building footprints. This enabled selection and launching of the documents for viewing from within the GIS software.
